Complete Guide to Military Time

How to Convert Standard Time to Military Time

The conversion is straightforward with two simple rules:

AM times (12:01 AM – 12:59 PM): For 1:00 AM through 12:59 PM, the hours stay the same — just remove the colon and AM/PM, and add leading zeros. 8:30 AM = 0830. 11:45 AM = 1145. 12:00 PM (noon) = 1200.

PM times (1:00 PM – 11:59 PM): Add 12 to the hour. 1:00 PM → 1 + 12 = 1300. 5:45 PM → 5 + 12 = 1745. 11:30 PM → 11 + 12 = 2330.

Midnight: 12:00 AM = 0000 (start of day). Some systems also accept 2400 for end of day.

How to Convert Military Time to Standard Time

Hours 0000–0059: This is 12:00–12:59 AM. 0000 = 12:00 AM, 0030 = 12:30 AM.

Hours 0100–1159: Same number with AM. 0800 = 8:00 AM, 1130 = 11:30 AM.

Hours 1200–1259: This is 12:00–12:59 PM. 1200 = 12:00 PM (noon), 1245 = 12:45 PM.

Hours 1300–2359: Subtract 12 and add PM. 1500 → 15 - 12 = 3:00 PM. 2100 → 21 - 12 = 9:00 PM.

How to Read and Say Military Time

Military time is spoken differently than written. Each digit is read separately, with "hundred" or "hours" at the end:

0600 → "zero six hundred" (6:00 AM)

0930 → "zero nine thirty" (9:30 AM)

1430 → "fourteen thirty" (2:30 PM)

2200 → "twenty-two hundred" (10:00 PM)

0015 → "zero zero fifteen" (12:15 AM)

Why Military Time Exists

The 12-hour clock creates dangerous ambiguity. A doctor ordering medication at "8:00" could mean morning or evening — a potentially fatal difference. A flight scheduled for "7:00" could be AM or PM. Military time eliminates this entirely: 0800 is always morning, 2000 is always evening. This is why it's the standard in professions where time errors can have serious consequences: military operations, hospital care, air traffic control, emergency dispatch, and international shipping.

Military Time in Different Countries

Most of the world uses 24-hour time as the default:

24-hour standard: Europe (UK, Germany, France), most of Asia (Japan, China, Korea), Latin America (Brazil, Mexico), Africa, and Russia. Digital clocks, train schedules, and official documents all use 24-hour format.

12-hour standard: United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Philippines use AM/PM in casual everyday use. However, even in these countries, military, aviation, healthcare, and IT professionals use 24-hour time.

Common Military Time Conversions

These are the most commonly searched conversions:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is military time?
Military time is a 24-hour time format that runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (11:59 PM). It eliminates AM/PM confusion by using unique numbers for each hour of the day. For example, 1:00 PM becomes 1300, and 6:30 PM becomes 1830.
How do I convert military time to regular time?
If the hour is 12 or less, it stays the same with AM (except 0000 = 12:00 AM). If the hour is 13 or greater, subtract 12 to get the PM time. For example: 1500 → 15 - 12 = 3:00 PM. 0800 → 8:00 AM. 0000 → 12:00 AM. 1200 → 12:00 PM.
How do I convert regular time to military time?
For AM times, use the same hour (add a leading zero if needed): 8:30 AM = 0830. For PM times, add 12 to the hour: 3:45 PM = 1545. Special cases: 12:00 AM (midnight) = 0000, and 12:00 PM (noon) = 1200.
What is 1300 in regular time?
1300 military time is 1:00 PM in regular (12-hour) time. Subtract 12 from 13 to get 1, then add PM.
What is 0000 vs 2400?
Both represent midnight. 0000 is the start of a new day (midnight beginning). 2400 is the end of a day (midnight ending). Most military and 24-hour systems use 0000 for midnight. Our converter uses 0000 as the standard.
Who uses military time?

It is the standard in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The US, Canada, and Australia primarily use the 12-hour AM/PM format in daily life.
Why is military time used?
The 24-hour format eliminates ambiguity. With 12-hour time, 8:00 could be morning or evening. With military time, 0800 is always morning and 2000 is always evening. This prevents critical errors in military operations, medical settings, transportation schedules, and emergency dispatch.
